Onions are a vegetable which is high in potassium. They contain many proteins, minerals and nutrients that are good for the body.

They have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, preventing blood clots, lowering cholesterol levels, preventing cancers and decreasing risks of malnutrition.

The onion has also been shown to have antimicrobial effects when consumed raw or cooked.

Onions are sometimes used for their antibacterial qualities to reduce the risk of foodborne illness in mayonnaise based dips.

To cut an onion, start by slicing it in half. Then, lay one half of the onion on its flat side on a cutting board and make vertical cuts along the side.

Next, rotate the onion 90 degrees and make horizontal cuts across the first set of cuts you made. Finally, slice through each of the slices created with the knife. The onion will fall apart into small pieces.

Cutting onions gives watery eyes due to the release of sulfurous gas. The onion contains an enzyme called allinase, which is activated by the act of chopping or cutting.

When this happens, tear-producing chemicals (mostly lachrymatory)containing sulfurous compounds like syn-propanethial S-oxide are released. The oxidizing agent is believed to be a quinone, which is similar to the active ingredient in tear gas.

So this is how to cut Onions.
