Suede is a beautiful choice for upholstery, but it does need some special care. The following tips will help you maintain your suede furniture.

There are many ways to clean a suede couch, but the best way is with vacuum cleaner plus water. After you have dried your suede couch, take a handkerchief or towel dampened with water and wipe the surface. Vacuum excess water from the fabric.

Large Items

For larger pieces of suede furniture, start by vacuuming the piece thoroughly to remove any loose dirt or debris. Then, mix warm water with dishwashing liquid in a bucket. Dip a clean sponge into the soapy water and wring out as much as possible.

Clean one section of your suede furniture at a time, making sure to rinse it thoroughly with a damp sponge. Do not let the sudsy water dry on your furniture, as this will cause spotting or uneven discoloration.

Wash the entire surface of your suede furniture piece, using small, circular motions. Once you’ve done this for the section you were working on, move to another area until you have completed one whole section; then repeat with each area until your entire piece is clean.

After completing each section, dry it by blotting it gently with a towel. Avoid wiping your suede furniture, as you can damage the fibers and create more or deeper scratches.

Smaller Pieces

If your sofa is just slightly dirty, you may be able to remove most of the dirt by shaking it vigorously outside before vacuuming it thoroughly. Vacuum up any dust or particles that are visible against the suede upholstery.

For smaller pieces of suede, such as a chair or ottoman, mix water with dishwashing liquid in a bucket and spray it directly on your furniture. If you sprayed too much water, simply blot excess liquid with towels; however, if there is not enough sudsy water on your piece, give it another quick spray with the sudsy mix.

Using a clean cloth or sponge, wash your furniture section by section following the same steps as listed above for larger pieces of suede. Make sure to rinse each area thoroughly before continuing.

After you have finished washing each section, blot away excess moisture with towels and let it air dry. If you prefer, place a fan nearby to speed up the process.

For any stubborn dirt or stains that remain on your suede furniture, mix baking soda with water or club soda and make a thick paste; then, apply it to the stained area and let it dry before vacuuming it away.

Cleaning Method: Vacuum cleaner plus water

1. Vacuum any loose dirt or debris from your furniture. Use the upholstery brush attachment on your vacuum to clean seams and crevices where dirt can easily get trapped.

2. Use a large sponge and some warm water mixed with dishwashing liquid to wipe down the suede upholstery.

3. Use a damp sponge to wipe off the soap suds on your furniture.

4. If there is still some dirt or stains that does not come off, use baking soda paste. Apply the paste onto the affected area and let it dry before vacuuming it away.
