In this article, we would like to provide some general tips for writing a cover letter.

So let’s get started!

How to write a Cover Letter

Tip 1: Provide an introduction, detailing your purpose for the resume and what you’re looking for.

Tip 2: For any past work experience, provide the employer’s name, where you worked, and what your responsibilities were.

Tip 3: Talk about any accomplishments that you have made at past companies.

For example, “I would like to be considered for the position of software developer at your company. I have several years of experience in developing web-based applications and am looking for a new position where I can continue applying my expertise. Two specific examples are listed below.”

Tip 4: For each past job or project that you have contributed in, provide a bulleted list of the most significant contributions.

Tip 5: For any educational degrees or certifications that you have received, provide the name of the school and what year you attended/received your certification in.

For example, “I graduated from XYZ University with a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics in 2020. In addition to my degree, I have completed four courses in web development at a local community college.”

Tip 6: If you feel that your abilities and qualifications match the job requirements, then mention this.

For example, “I am confident that I will be a good fit for this position because I have several years of experience with developing web-based applications and my education is in computer science.”

Tip 7: Do not make the cover letter more than one page.

For example, “I enjoyed learning more about your company during our phone interview today. I am very interested in joining your team because of all the great things that you do at ABC company. I am very interested in gaining more experience as a software developer and feel that working for your company will provide me with the necessary skills to further my career.”

Tip 8: Thank them, and let them know how they can contact you.

For example, “Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like to schedule a time for us to speak.”

Tip 9: Make sure all of your grammar and spelling are correct, as this will demonstrate the level of attention given to detail that you would give if you worked at their company.

For example, “In the past I have had the opportunity to work with C++ on both Windows and Linux platforms which gave me experience with multi-platform applications.”

Tip 10: Customize your letter to each job you are applying for.

For example, “My educational background and professional experience make me a suitable candidate for the position of software developer that you have open.”

Tip 11: If you don’t think that your skills match the job, then tell them why you think you could be a good fit for the company.

For example, “As a recent graduate from ABC University, I hope to gain valuable experience as a software developer and work towards future career goals.”

Tip 12: Avoid using slang.

For example, “I’m looking for a challenging position where I can expand my abilities.”

We hope these tips help you write your next cover letter!
